Updates on Refractive Surgery
This special issue belongs to the section "Ophthalmology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, “Updates on Refractive Surgery,” aims to focus on the most recent advances in the field of refractive error correction, highlighting how technological innovation and improved clinical understanding are reshaping this field. This Special Issue will cover the evolution of corneal refractive surgery, from surface ablation to modern lenticule surgery, with particular emphasis on modern laser platforms, nomogram development, and imaging systems that allow for greater precision, safety, and predictability of outcomes. Furthermore, we will also review phakic lens (PIOL) and intraocular lens (IOL) technologies.
Key topics include femtosecond laser-assisted techniques, keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx), IOL and PIOL technology, and extended depth of focus and toric lenses, which broaden surgical options for presbyopic and astigmatic patients, or for patients who are not good candidates for corneal surgery. Equally important are the updates in patient selection, preoperative diagnostics, and postoperative management, which are aimed at minimizing complications such as dry eyes, ectasia, and refractive regression.
Finally, this Special Issue will outline the importance of patient-centered outcomes and quality of vision, rather than visual acuity alone. Thus, this issue reflects the dynamic nature of refractive surgery and provides clinicians with practical insights to optimize surgical planning, improve visual results, and meet the increasing expectations of today’s refractive patients.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
