Special Issue Information
Dear colleagues,
Mechatronics is the synergistic integration of mechanical engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control in the design and manufacturing of industrial products and processes. It is founded on the application of complex combining decisions of sensors, actuators, signal conditioning, power electronics, control algorithms, computer hardware and software to manage complexity, uncertainty, and communication in engineered systems. The purpose is to enable the automation of the operation of physical systems.
The essential characteristics of a mechatronics engineer and the key to success in mechatronic design is a balance between sets of skills:
- Modeling (physical and mathematical), analysis (closed-form and numerical simulation), and control design (analog and digital) of dynamic physical systems
- Experimental validation of models and understanding the key issues in the hardware implementation of designs
This Special Issue will disseminate the latest research achievements, findings, and ideas in fields related to Mechatronics Design and Application. This issue will include revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers that were presented at the International Congress of Mechanics Mechatronics and Materials (IC3M2019).
However, we are also strongly encouraging the submission of additional contributions from researchers working in this field who did not participate in the IC3M2019 Congress, in order to further enlarge the field coverage.
Papers are welcome on all major areas of R&D and innovation in Mechatronics Design and Application, and the topics of interest are as follows:
- Systems engineering and robotics
- Design methodology
- Integration CAD/CAM/CAE
- Biomechanics and biomaterials
- Dynamics and vibration of structures
- Smart materials and structures
- Fluid–structure interaction and vibroacoustics
- Reliability-based analysis
- Fatigue fracture behavior
- Modeling and analysis of Structures
- Materials: structure and behavior
- Additive manufacturing process
- Industrial application and technology transfer
- Fluid and energy engineering
As Guest Editors, we cordially invite you to submit your high-quality research findings as a manuscript for consideration and possible publication in this Special Issue “Mechatronics Design and Application”, to be published in the journal Machines.
All accepted articles will be published after international peer review. Your contribution is highly welcome, and we are looking forward to the great success of this Special Issue thanks in part to your high-quality research outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
