The Impact of Brownfields and Brownfield Regeneration Projects on Land Cover Changes and Land Use Planning

This special issue belongs to the section “Land Planning and Landscape Architecture“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Brownfields are properties, both within cities and in the countryside, having previously had an economically viable use, then vacated and possibly left contaminated. Brownfield redevelopments are perceived as a significant element of local development, with the regeneration accompanied by the decontamination of sites and an increase in economic activity, enabling us to preserve their cultural heritage. The reuse of brownfields creates a great opportunity for the acceleration of long-term regeneration processes in the whole area. A brownfield’s position in the morphogenetic zone of an urbanized area, on its periphery or in rural areas has an impact on its potential reuses. On the other hand, once a brownfield is present, it significantly influences the use of neighboring areas, having the potential of appearing in the regeneration planning projects of the brownfield and local planning.

This Special Issue seeks manuscripts reflecting different spatial and planning aspects of brownfield persistence and redevelopment in urban as well as in rural areas.

Authors are encouraged to submit contributions especially regarding the following priority areas:

  • Solving the brownfield issue in local development planning;
  • Impact of presence of brownfield on land cover and land use in neighboring areas;
  • Impact of the environment on brownfield redevelopment projects;
  • Preferences for brownfield redevelopment project in different environments;
  • Perception of brownfield impacts on surrounding areas by local inhabitants.
