Cognitive Learning and Application of Emerging Technologies in Education
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, “Cognitive Learning and Application of Emerging Technologies in Education.” Generative AI (GenAI) and related intelligent technologies are rapidly entering learning and changing how learners acquire knowledge, think and solve problems. The central concern of this Special Issue is how these technologies reshape the cognitive processes that underpin human intelligence. We therefore focus on the cognitive consequences of GenAI and emerging technologies in authentic educational settings.
This Special Issue gives priority to empirical research. We are especially interested in how GenAI and similar technologies influence learners’ self-regulated learning, their cognitive and metacognitive development and higher-order thinking such as creativity and problem-solving. We also welcome studies on the cognitive processes underlying human–AI interactions and shifting roles of learners and AI, as well as on the cognitive, behavioral, emotional and ethical effects that GenAI brings to teaching and learning.
In this Special Issue, original empirical studies are particularly welcome. Topics of interest include the following:
- How GenAI and other emerging technologies support or hinder self-regulated learning, including the ways learners plan, monitor and reflect on their own learning;
- The effects of GenAI on cognitive and metacognitive development across different learners and learning tasks;
- The role of GenAI in fostering or constraining creative thinking, problem-solving and other forms of higher-order thinking;
- The cognitive processes underlying human–AI interaction, and how agency and responsibility are distributed between learners and AI;
- Cognitive offloading and over-reliance, including when delegating thinking to GenAI benefits learning and when it does not;
- The cognitive, behavioral, emotional and ethical consequences of integrating GenAI into teaching and learning.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Intelligence is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
