Dear Colleagues,
Forest soils are a critical resource for maintaining forest productivity, biodiversity, and global carbon sink functions. However, long-term intensive management, acid deposition, and climate change have exacerbated problems such as soil acidification, nutrient imbalance, and reduced biological activity. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition that an in-depth understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of forest soils and their interrelationships is a scientific prerequisite for achieving sustainable forest management.
This Special Issue aims to bring together the latest research on the linkages between forest soil properties, ecological functions, and management practices. We focus on soil carbon and nutrient turnover, soil hydraulic properties, soil community structure and ecological functions, as well as the effects of different management practices (e.g., harvesting, fertilization, understory vegetation management) on soil multifunctionality.
We particularly welcome studies employing new techniques such as stable isotope tracing, high-throughput sequencing, microdialysis, and in situ monitoring. Integrated research across scales (from molecular to landscape) and disciplines (soil science, microbiology, hydrology) is encouraged.
We invite original research articles, reviews, and short communications. Topics include, but are not limited to, forest soil carbon sequestration and stabilization mechanisms; soil microbial diversity and function; the root-soil-litter continuum; ecological restoration techniques for degraded forest soils; and forest management decision-making based on soil health.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
