Complexity, Connectivity, and Scale in Environmental Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "Multidisciplinary Applications".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Environmental systems (e.g., climatic, hydrologic, ecologic, biologic) are complex nonlinear dynamically evolving systems. They are generally made up of large number of components that are interconnected and vary across space and time. Unraveling the nature and degree of complexity and connectivity in environmental systems across different spatial and temporal scales, as well as their interactions with other systems (e.g., socio-economic systems), has always been a challenge.
Numerous scientific concepts and methods have been proposed and applied to various environmental systems, processes, and problems. Despite this progress, our understanding of how environmental systems function remains inadequate. There are several reasons for this, including the inherent spatiotemporal complexity of environmental systems; natural and anthropogenic influences; constraints in environmental data and computational power; and the absence of a strong scientific theory that can represent all types of connections.
This Special Issue aims to advance our understanding of the complexity, connectivity, and scaling properties associated with environmental systems. The relevance and role of modern complex systems science theories, such as chaos theory, complex network theory, entropy theory, and fractal theory, in studying environmental systems are of particular focus. Papers for this Special Issue may cover a wide range of aspects from these theories relevant to environmental systems and address the following topics, among others:
- Development of new methods for environmental modeling and prediction;
- Application of theories to various processes and problems associated with environmental systems;
- Linking the complexity and predictability of environmental systems;
- Coupling/integrating multiple theories for holistic modeling of environmental systems;
- Data-related issues in the application of the theories to environmental systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Entropy is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
