Transforming Healthcare with Large Language Models: Innovations, Challenges, and Future Directions

The emergence of large language models (LLMs) has introduced a paradigm shift in healthcare, offering groundbreaking opportunities for improving patient care, diagnosis, reporting, medical education, and operational efficiency. This Special Issue explores the multifaceted applications of LLMs in healthcare, ranging from automated clinical documentation and radiology report generation to patient interaction and decision support systems. This issue will highlight innovative research demonstrating how LLMs enhance precision, reduce workload, and streamline workflows while maintaining ethical and regulatory compliance. It will also examine challenges such as managing bias, ensuring data privacy, and addressing the limitations of LLMs in high-stake environments. Contributions addressing the integration of LLMs with other AI technologies, including medical image analysis and multimodal learning, will provide a comprehensive view of their potential. This Special Issue aims to establish a roadmap for the responsible and effective deployment of LLMs in healthcare. We welcome original research, reviews, and case studies that push the boundaries of what is possible, ensuring that these transformative technologies have significant potential in advancing global health outcomes.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
