Quantum Dynamics and Ultracold Atoms

Dear Colleagues,

It is widely acknowledged that ultracold atoms represent a promising avenue for the development of quantum science. This Special Issue, which focuses specifically on quantum dynamics and ultracold atoms, aims to facilitate the dissemination of cutting-edge results related to the use of this platform for the study of fundamental quantum phenomena.

Key research areas include the following:

• Quantum simulation: The exquisite control of dimensionality, interaction and trapping potential afforded by ultracold atoms allows for the modelling and simulation of complex systems in a range of physical fields, from condensed matter physics to cosmology. This enables the investigation of open questions in these fields.
• Quantum physics at ultra-low temperatures: close to absolute zero, an atomic cloud exhibits macroscopic coherence, which manifests itself in a range of intriguing phenomena, including the nucleation of vortices and the formation of persistent flows.
• Quantum phase transitions and out-of-equilibrium dynamics: The exploration of rich phase diagrams with exotic quantum phases with peculiar symmetries, such as bosonic supersolids or ordered spin systems, is a key feature to study both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties, thermalization and universal scaling in critical phenomena.
• Ultracold mixtures: the interplay between different atomic species can lead to the stabilization of non-trivial many-body phases, such as quantum droplets, or to the study the physics of defects and molecules.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Atoms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
