Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The oral microbiome represents one of the most complex and dynamic microbial ecosystems in the human body, playing a critical role in both oral and systemic health. Recent advances in molecular biology, sequencing technologies, and bioinformatics have significantly enhanced our understanding of microbial composition, function, and interactions within oral biofilms. However, important challenges remain in translating these findings into clinically meaningful applications.
This Special Issue of Applied Sciences aims to highlight innovative research that bridges fundamental microbiological mechanisms with practical clinical solutions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, oral biofilm formation and dysbiosis, microbial detection and viability assessment, antimicrobial and antibiofilm strategies, host–microbe interactions, and the role of the oral microbiome in systemic diseases. Emerging diagnostic approaches, including rapid viability assays and chairside technologies, as well as novel therapeutic strategies such as bioactive materials, nanotechnology-based antimicrobials, and microbiome-modulating interventions, are particularly encouraged.
Despite decades of research, the complex polymicrobial interactions that shift a commensal biofilm toward a cariogenic state are not fully understood. Recent advances in metagenomics, single-cell transcriptomics, and biofilm imaging technologies have created an unprecedented opportunity to dissect these mechanisms at high resolution. This Special Issue will consolidate cutting-edge research on oral biofilm ecology and dental caries, bridging basic science discoveries with translational and clinical applications.
We invite original research articles, reviews, and short communications that advance our understanding of oral microbial ecology and contribute to improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases. Submissions addressing biofilm formation and structural organization, microbial community dynamics and dysbiosis, host–microbe interactions in enamel demineralization, novel anti-biofilm strategies including probiotics and bacteriophage therapy, and advances in diagnostics and early caries detection are particularly welcome. This Special Issue seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate the translation of microbiological discoveries into clinical practice.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
