Eye Tracking Techniques and Applications
This special issue belongs to the section “Computing and Artificial Intelligence“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Eye tracking has become a mature yet rapidly evolving technology that enables objective and fine-grained analysis of visual attention, cognitive processes, and interaction behavior across a wide range of application domains. Advances in sensing technologies, data processing algorithms, and experimental methodologies have expanded its use beyond controlled laboratory settings, fostering integration into real-world scenarios such as immersive environments, education, healthcare, accessibility, and inclusive design.
This Special Issue aims to gather high-quality contributions addressing both methodological innovations and practical applications of eye tracking. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, eye tracking in Human–Computer Interaction, UX evaluation and usability studies, accessibility and assistive technologies, multimodal interaction, cognitive modeling, and clinical or diagnostic uses of eye tracking, and VR/AR and mixed-reality applications. Submissions may cover methodological advances, empirical studies, system designs, engineering solutions, and application-driven research in which eye tracking plays a central role.
By collecting original research articles and state-of-the-art reviews, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of current trends, challenges, and future directions in eye tracking research and its applications, emphasizing technological solutions with real-world impact.
Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Eye tracking in HCI, UX evaluation, and usability studies.
- Multimodal interaction combining eye tracking with other sensors.
- Visual analytics and visualization of eye tracking data.
- Eye tracking for accessibility and assistive technologies.
- Clinical and diagnostic applications (e.g., ASD and neurological disorders).
- Eye tracking in education and learning analytics.
- Applications in psychology, cognitive science, and behavioral research.
- Gaze-based interaction in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.
- Machine learning and AI for eye tracking data interpretation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
