Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has attracted the interest of the industry due to its potential for flexible and automated production of complex geometry objects, combined with minimizing the time required to develop new products. According to a recent analysis, the market for AM products is projected to grow annually by 18%. Although AM technologies are an integral part of digitized industrial production and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Architectural, Engineering and Construction Industry (AECI) has been reluctant to adopt them in design and construction. While AECI has been a pillar industry since the 1980s, its scale and impact on the global economy continuously expand. This development is also associated with important drawbacks, including large contributions to waste production, huge energy consumption and severe environmental pollution. The recent Green New Deal for Europe sets the reform of the heavy industry as its primary objective, including AECI, which accounts for 40% of the energy consumed on the continent. The main tools for achieving this objective are to minimize both materials used and the amount of AECI waste. The purpose of this Special Issue is to present the progress achieved so far and the challenges of the integration of 3D printing technology into AECI.

It is our great pleasure to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue by presenting your results on 3D printing, including issues and challenges for AECI from an academic, design office or construction company’s point of view. The papers can focus on applications of 3D printing related to all aspects of AECI. Articles can also include but are not limited to manufacturing technologies; modeling; optimization; artificial intelligence algorithms; control; measurements; analysis; and/or experimental investigations related to additive manufacturing combined with the Engineering, Architecture and Construction Industry (EACI).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
