Cover Story: Milk carries more than nutrients; it also records the metabolic state of the dairy cow. In this study, milk collected two weeks after calving was examined with three platforms, DI/LC-MS/MS, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, and ICP-MS, to search for non-invasive signatures of subclinical ketosis. Each platform revealed a different layer of the disorder: altered phosphatidylcholines, acylcarnitines and citrulline; shifts in organic-acid patterns; and changes in antioxidant-related trace minerals such as selenium, manganese, chromium, and cobalt. When combined, these signals produced a stronger diagnostic profile than any single method alone. The cover image illustrates the central concept: one milk sample, three technologies, and a broader biochemical window into early metabolic stress. These findings support milk metabolomics as a promising route toward precision monitoring of transition-cow health. View this paper
