Cover Story: The environmental impacts of the production of packaging in contact with food are still high. This research evaluates the environmental performance, using the Life Cycle Assessmet approach, of a single-use food contact packaging made with polypropylene. The aim is to propose mitigation strategies in order to reduce the environmental impacts. Three different scenarios with different energy source mixes were evaluated. The results show that upstream processes contribute most to the environmental profile followed by core processes. An increase in the use of renewable energy can lead to environmental benefits, with a reduction in the impact ranging from 13% to 61% depending on the energy source mix. View this paper
