Cover Story: UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)-based close-range photogrammetry has seen a recent surge of public interest. Various software solutions enable users to create 3D models from UAV images with relative ease. However, many contain black-box algorithms, which render the quality control of the results difficult. An open source toolbox called DBAT (Damped Bundle Adjustment Toolbox) is proposed, based on the Matlab language, which enables the reprocessing of Agisoft PhotoScan projects. DBAT also generates useful metrics and diagnostics related to the quality of the bundle adjustment process. The use of this toolbox, as well as another open source algorithm Apero, was shown to be able to detect possible anomalies in the data. In cases where problems are encountered in the project, this assessment method can be useful to detect errors that may not be explicitly presented by PhotoScan. View the paper
