Cover Story: Global soil degradation is a major concern, with urban populations projected to increase by 2.5 billion by 2050. Urban soils provide key ecosystem services, such as plant growth support, air purification, and temperature regulation. However, compaction—caused by pedestrian and vehicle traffic—reduces porosity, limiting water infiltration and gas exchange, increasing flood risks, and intensifying urban heat islands. Organic amendments may reduce the effects of soil compaction, thereby maintaining plant health. This study examines the effects of chipped cork, municipal compost, and their combination on compacted urban soil and the physiology of the Quercus ilex growing there, assessing their biochemical and physiological responses during the summer. The findings offer insights into sustainable urban soil management in the context of climate change. View this paper
