Cover Story: Olefins, like ethylene, propylene, and butene, are essential building blocks for the petrochemical industries, which employ them to produce materials for transportation, hospitals, households, and electronics. Usually, vacuum gas oil is cracked in a fluid catalytic cracker (FCC) unit by zeolite catalysts to produce olefin gases, but the yield is insufficient to satisfy the world market’s growing demand. Directly cracking crude oil in an FCC unit is aimed at meeting demands. At the heart of the FCC units is the performance of the zeolite catalyst. The yield of olefin gases depends on the activity of the zeolite catalyst, the hierarchical structure, the acid strength, the pore size distribution, and dopant dispersion. View this paper
