Cover Story: Surgical neutering in pet rabbits is a common practice to prevent reproduction and its related health issues, and effective postoperative pain management is crucial but remains underexplored. This study compared carprofen and meloxicam for analgesia in 50 rabbits undergoing neutering. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine, medetomidine, and butorphanol, and the rabbits received 2 mg/kg of carprofen or 1 mg/kg of meloxicam subcutaneously. Pain was assessed using the CANCRS scale before surgery, 6 hours postoperatively, and at three intervals on the following day. No significant difference was found between treatments in terms of CANCRS scores, food intake, or fecal output. Both drugs were well tolerated, with no adverse effects recorded. Further research with diverse assessment methods is needed to optimize pain management in rabbits undergoing surgery. View this paper
