Cover Story: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine disorders in dogs, similar to with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in human patients. The immunologic milieu, inflammatory phenotype, and role of vitamin D have been well clarified in people with T1DM, but there is minimal information on dogs with naturally occurring diabetes mellitus. Human T1DM patients have several immune deficiencies, a pro-inflammatory phenotype characterized by cytokine and positive acute-phase protein derangements associated with diabetes-related complications, and vitamin D deficiency, linked to poor glycemic control and exaggerated inflammatory responses. The repletion of vitamin D in people has been shown to improve glycemic control and dampen inflammation. The study was to explore the immune function, inflammatory phenotype, and links with vitamin D in dogs with naturally occurring diabetes mellitus. View this paper
