Cover Story: With the rapid increase in the generation of “cold data” globally, there is an ever-increasing demand for higher data storage capacities. Optical data storage (ODS) has a better shelf life (Blu-ray) but lags existing technologies in terms of storage capacity as this planar technology cannot be scaled. In 3D ODS, the storage capacity is limited by increasing spherical aberrations and light scattering with depth. We maximize the storage capacity of fluorescence-based 3D ODS without the use of specialized optics, index matching liquids, new material development, and complex techniques. Using commonly available transparent plastics, we demonstrate the storage capacity of 275 GB/standard optical disc by embedding 120 layers of data. Our method enables practical implementation in developing a viable 3D ODS-based consumer electronic device. View this paper
