Cover Story: The ability to initiate and engage in relationships is a critical landmark and predictor of children’s development and well-being. This study examined the relationship between the quality of kindergartens’ outdoor physical environments and preschoolers’ social functioning. Two Portuguese kindergartens participated according to different levels of their outdoor physical environment quality. The social proximity of twenty-six children (aged 3–6, 10 boys) at the playground was measured through Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID). In the higher quality outdoor area, children spent less time alone and more time in social proximity in smaller groups and with different genders. These outcomes highlight the importance of guaranteeing more challenging and diverse kindergarten outdoor settings to support preschoolers’ social needs. View this paper
