Cover Story: In this paper, we propose to control prosthetic hands by inferring hand movements from tactile myography (TMG) data. TMG is exploited as a replacement or in addition to surface electromyography (sEMG), traditionally used in prosthetics to detect muscle activity. The tactile sensor device is made of 320 highly sensitive cells organized in an array forming a bracelet. We present a Gaussian process regression approach with different kernel distances to improve the prediction of wrist and single-finger activation, using TMG, sEMG, and a combination of the two.
