Cover Story: A new class of nanozymes, based on citrate-capped palladium nanoparticles, has been discovered for the treatment of oxidative stress. Precise size tuning, low polydispersity, and biocompatibility of the nanoparticles were achieved by an innovative protocol employing only biocompatible reagents and aqueous solution. Moreover, a recently developed approach, i.e. Sputtering-Enabled Intracellular X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, was exploited to characterize the nanoparticles in terms of intracellular stability. The Pd nanozymes showed higher antioxidant performances compared to natural enzymes in vitro. Moreover, their ability to restore physiological ROS homeostasis in redox-compromised cells, ensured by their stability in cellular environment, paves the way to potential clinical applications.
