Cover Story: It has been observed that the divalent ions, Mg2+ and SO42−, can be transported against their own concentration gradient when in the presence of large concentration gradients of Na+ and Cl−. This is referred to as uphill transport. Understanding this phenomenon is of essence for reverse electrodialysis as it lowers the power output. We derive transport equations in the framework of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and show, by a set of simple assumptions, that the phenomenon can be predicted. Key insight is found by describing the transport by measurable chemical potentials and ion mobilities. The equations of the transport model are tested by regressing transport coefficients to previously reported experimental observations. We show that the regressed parameters are reasonable and that the model can reproduce and predict uphill transport. View this paper
