Cover Story: Weaning is a key phase in a pig's life, marked by early stress and potential immunosuppression. Poor handling compromises the piglet’s health, leading to veterinary medicine usage. This study presents an evaluation model for weaned piglets, assessing ten hygiene and handling indices. These indices, which are individually scored out of 10, encompass the preweaning handling, batch management, biosecurity, water and feed management, health programs, stockmen training, temperature, ventilation, and floor conditions. Tested on 23 farms, the proposed management score significantly correlates with post-weaning piglets’ health and productivity. Enhancing the scoring indices is crucial for improving piglets’ welfare and overall farm performance, ultimately reducing medication use. View this paper
