Cover Story: Shelter cats are a growing population in the US and other countries. Shelter cats face unique welfare concerns due to environmental stressors such as loud noises, inadequate enrichment, and social isolation. Foster programs for shelter dogs have become more commonplace and are often perceived as beneficial. However, foster programs for adult shelter cats are far less common. The aim of this research was to evaluate outcomes associated with placing adult shelter cats in a short-term foster environment. Results indicate that cats placed in foster care were not at a disadvantage and did not display decreased social behavior, increased fear or aggression, or increased cortisol levels while in the foster home. This work provides empirical evidence that cats can be placed into foster homes, even for short periods of time, when shelter space is limited. View this paper
