Cover Story: C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is overexpressed on a significant number of tumor entities. CXCR4-directed positron emission tomography (PET) can visualize receptor expression in vivo. We evaluated the potential of CXCR4-directed imaging in patients with poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) and compared it to the established reference standard 18F-FDG PET/computed tomography (CT). Notably, the biopsy results of the tumor lesions showed weak-to-moderate CXCR4 expression; however, 18F-FDG PET/CT detected significantly more tumor lesions and was superior to CXCR-directed PET/CT imaging.
