Cover Story: In this study, aromatic pollutants as hole scavengers were investigated for BiVO4 and rGO-BiVO4 photoanodes in photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production. Density functional theory calculations combined with photoelectrochemical characterization revealed that benzene derivatives with electron-donating groups, such as 5-aminosalicylic acid, significantly improved hydrogen production performance. rGO further suppressed photogenerated charge recombination within BiVO4, thereby further improving performance. The measured current densities of the rGO-BiVO4 photoanode in the presence of 14 mg dm−3 5-ASA have increased nearly elevenfold in relation to just 0.1 M NaCl. 0.53 μmol cm−2 of hydrogen was accumulated over the course of two hours under LED illumination. Thus, simultaneous water purification and clean energy production can be achieved. View this paper
