Dear Colleagues,
Recent advances in spectroscopy have significantly expanded the capabilities of chemical and environmental sensing, enabling molecularly specific, real-time, and non-invasive detection across diverse application domains. From environmental monitoring and pollution tracking to health diagnostics and industrial process control, emerging spectroscopic techniques are transforming how chemical information is captured, interpreted, and translated into actionable insights.
This Special Issue aims to highlight recent developments in Advanced Spectroscopic Techniques for Chemical and Environmental Sensing, with a particular focus on next-generation optical and multimodal approaches. Contributions are invited that advance fundamental sensing physics, novel instrumentation, and data-driven analytics for detecting chemical species in complex environments. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photothermal spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, and hybrid multimodal sensing platforms that combine complementary transduction mechanisms.
We especially welcome studies that demonstrate real-time, in situ, and non-invasive sensing capabilities for applications such as air and water quality monitoring, detection of emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS and micro/nano plastics), industrial emissions sensing, and biomedical or wearable chemical sensing. In particular, we encourage submissions that integrate spectroscopy with advanced data analytics, machine learning, or intelligent sensing systems for industrial process monitoring and control. Furthermore, contributions that explore multimodal sensing architectures—combining optical spectroscopy with complementary techniques such as imaging, 3D vision, or other physical sensing modalities—are also of great interest, as they offer enhanced capabilities for comprehensive environmental and chemical analysis in complex real-world scenarios.
By bringing together interdisciplinary advances in spectroscopy, sensing materials, instrumentation, and AI-enabled analytics, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive perspective on the next generation of chemical and environmental sensing technologies and to inspire innovative solutions for pressing sustainability and health challenges.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
