Water Treatment Technology for Emerging Contaminants, 3rd Edition
This special issue belongs to the section "Wastewater Treatment and Reuse".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue aims to provide an authoritative platform for academia and the industry to exchange and disseminate the latest research findings and application cases concerning the treatment of emerging pollutants in water. It seeks to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among experts and scholars across diverse disciplines, thereby advancing the innovation and development of water treatment technologies targeting emerging contaminants. The focus will extend beyond traditional removal methods to encompass their behavior in engineered systems and natural environments.
We welcome submissions of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and insightful case studies related to emerging pollutants. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Emerging Pollutants: Identification, fate, environmental pathways, and ecological risk assessment.
- Microplastics: Detection, characterization, migration, transformation, and removal technologies.
- Pharmaceutical Residues: Analysis, degradation mechanisms, and advanced treatment processes.
- Organic Pollutants: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and innovative degradation strategies.
- Heavy Metals and Inorganic Pollutants: Speciation, recovery, and novel remediation approaches.
- Artificial Intelligence and Data-Driven Solutions: Applications in monitoring, prediction, process optimization, control, and decision-support systems for emerging pollutant management.
- Process Control, Fate, and Interfacial Dynamics: Studies on the influence, behavior, and succession of emerging pollutants during water treatment processes; multimedia interfacial effects (e.g., water–solid–biofilm) on their transport, transformation, and removal.
This Special Issue will showcase and critically evaluate water treatment technologies and methodologies for various categories of emerging pollutants. Research in these areas will enhance our fundamental understanding and capability to address the challenges these pollutants pose to aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, by presenting cutting-edge research and practical applications, this issue aims to contribute actionable solutions for mitigating emerging pollutant contamination in water environments. Through a synthesis of current literature and new findings, it will provide a clear framework for positioning and guiding the future development of intelligent and precision-based water treatment technologies for emerging pollutants.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
