Dear Colleagues,
Recent advances in soil moisture measurement and modeling have improved our understanding of land surface processes and land–atmosphere interactions. Continuing developments in observations, numerical models, and data-driven approaches provide new opportunities to improve the estimation, prediction, and characterization of soil moisture and related land surface states, together with the analyses of the effects of this parameter on natural hazards and climate change impacts.
This Special Issue focuses on recent advances in soil moisture measurement and modeling. Topics include, but are not limited to, soil moisture measurements; remote sensing retrieval and validation; land surface modeling, including coupled land surface–hydrology and land surface–atmosphere systems; soil moisture and related land surface variables; parameter estimation; model calibration and optimization; ensemble prediction; data assimilation, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, and machine learning; the application of advanced methods of soil moisture monitoring and modeling for the prediction of natural hazards; and potential integration of site-characterizing data, such as geophysical and geomorphological data.
We welcome original research articles and review papers that contribute to advances in these areas.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
