Pathogen Removal From Water: Technologies, Techniques and Inactivation (Disinfection) Processes

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Access to safe water essential for the development of human societies. Different water treatments produce effluents with varying microbiological qualities according to the regulations and intended water use. Water quality monitoring is essential to guaranty the safety of water, traditionally accomplished by the use of microbial indicators such as E. coli. Water availability as well as water quality for human consumption is expected to worsen within the global warming scenario together with the global population increase making it necessary to look for non-conventional water resources to increase water availability as well as water re-use.

This Special Issue aims to comprehensively explore the performance of novel water treatments, from treatments aimed at physical removal of pathogens such as filtration-based techniques, to disinfection processes, such as advanced oxidation processes or biological-based treatments, to reduce the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. These treatments can be applied to different water sources for different water uses. It will also cover novel techniques to identify microorganism viability for use in risk assessment. Molecular techniques not specifically addressing viability of pathogens or indicators will not be considered. This issue invites both research articles and reviews that contribute to advancing knowledge in these areas. Case studies demonstrating successful implementations, challenges encountered, and the socioeconomic implications of adopting these technologies will also considered. Through this comprehensive approach, this Special Issue aims to provide valuable insights and practical solutions for enhancing water safety and availability in the face of the water global challenges we are facing.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
