Advanced Oxidation Processes for the Transformation of Emerging Contaminants and Formation of Disinfection Byproducts in Water

Dear Colleagues,
The rising prevalence of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, PFAS, and endocrine disruptors, poses a severe challenge to global water security. Advanced oxidation processes have become a cornerstone for highly efficient degradation of a wide spectrum of emerging contaminants. However, the reactive nature of advanced oxidation processes often creates a “double-edged sword” scenario: the effective transformation of target contaminants can inadvertently trigger the formation of toxic disinfection byproducts.
This Special Issue aims to advance the scientific understanding of the critical trade-offs between contaminant removal and byproduct control. We seek original research, comprehensive reviews, and methodological studies that elucidate the chemical pathways, kinetics, and toxicological implications of advanced oxidation processes-driven water treatment. By bridging the gap between degradation efficiency and chemical safety, this collection will provide new insights for the development of green and sustainable water purification technologies.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Degradation mechanisms and kinetics of emerging contaminants by advanced oxidation processes;
- Identification and toxicity assessment of transformation products and novel disinfection byproducts during advanced oxidation processes;
- The role of water matrix components (e.g., natural organic matter, halides, etc.) in byproduct formation pathways;
- Development of novel advanced oxidation process technologies, including radical and non-radical based advanced oxidation processes;
- Polymerization‑Oriented advanced oxidation processes;
- Hybrid treatment systems and challenges in full-scale advanced oxidation process implementation.
