Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Probiotics are living microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host. In recent years, formulation technologies have advanced considerably, improving probiotic stability, bioavailability, and targeted delivery. While traditional probiotic products remain popular, modern strategies—including microencapsulation, lyophilization, and synbiotic formulations—offer enhanced protection from gastrointestinal conditions and ensure viability upon intestinal delivery.

The applications of probiotics have expanded well beyond gut health. Current research highlights their role in managing metabolic disorders (e.g., obesity and type 2 diabetes), modulating the immune system, supporting mental health via the gut–brain axis, and contributing to skin and oral health. Evidence also supports their effectiveness in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea and promoting overall microbiome balance.

The development of next-generation probiotics, including genetically engineered strains and microbiome-derived candidates, holds promise for personalized and precision medicine. However, ongoing challenges remain regarding strain specificity, optimal dosage, and global regulatory harmonization.

The aim of this Special Issue on Modern Formulation and Applications of Probiotics is to highlight recent progress and novel approaches in this dynamic field. We welcome original research articles and comprehensive reviews that address innovative formulation techniques, characterization strategies, mechanistic insights, and translational aspects of probiotic science. As Guest Editors, we warmly invite you to contribute your latest findings and perspectives to advance scientific discourse on modern probiotics.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
