Antimicrobial Resistance in Sexually Transmitted Bacterial Pathogens

Dear Colleagues,

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become one of the most pressing challenges in the management of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), threatening the effectiveness of current treatment strategies and complicating disease control worldwide. The rapid emergence and dissemination of resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, together with increasing reports of resistance in other STI-associated bacterial pathogens and bacterial species involved in polymicrobial genital infections, highlight the urgent need for multidisciplinary research to improve surveillance, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the epidemiology, molecular mechanisms, genomic evolution and clinical impact of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial STIs. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and perspectives addressing laboratory diagnostics, molecular and genomic approaches, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, resistance surveillance, host–pathogen interactions, treatment outcomes, antimicrobial stewardship and the development of innovative therapeutic and preventive strategies. Contributions exploring the impact of AMR in key populations, including individuals receiving HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), as well as studies integrating microbiome, resistome and One Health perspectives, are also encouraged.

By bringing together experts from microbiology, infectious diseases, epidemiology and public health, this Special Issue aims to stimulate interdisciplinary discussion and provide valuable insights to support future research and evidence-based clinical practice.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
