Poxviruses comprise a diverse group of large double-stranded DNA viruses that infect a broad range of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, including humans, domestic animals, wildlife, and economically important livestock species. Poxviruses include several medically and veterinary relevant groups, such as mpox virus and other orthopoxviruses, as well as parapoxviruses, capripoxviruses, and avipoxviruses, all of which are important for human and animal health, biotechnology, vaccine development, and One Health surveillance.
This Special Issue, “Poxviruses: Biology, Evolution, Surveillance, and Control,” aims to bring together original research articles, reviews, and short communications addressing recent advances in poxvirus research. The scope includes, but is not limited to, viral biology, replication, host–virus interactions, immune evasion, pathogenesis, molecular epidemiology, genomic surveillance, viral evolution, diagnostics, vaccine platforms, antiviral strategies, zoonotic transmission, and the ecological aspects of poxvirus circulation. Studies focusing on human, animal, and environmental interfaces are particularly welcome, especially those contributing to a better understanding of poxvirus emergence, re-emergence, and geographic spread.
The recent global mpox outbreaks, together with the continued spread and impact of lumpy skin disease in livestock, have reinforced the importance of continuous genomic, epidemiological, and virological surveillance of poxviruses. At the same time, several neglected poxvirus infections affecting livestock, wildlife, and humans remain insufficiently studied in many regions, limiting our understanding of their epidemiology, diversity, and potential impact. This Special Issue seeks to provide an integrated view of poxvirus biology and control, highlighting both classical and emerging topics in the field. By combining molecular, clinical, epidemiological, ecological, and evolutionary perspectives, this collection will complement the existing literature and contribute to the development of improved diagnostic tools, surveillance systems, vaccines, antivirals, and public health strategies.
We invite researchers working in virology, microbiology, immunology, genomics, epidemiology, veterinary medicine, public health, and related disciplines to submit manuscripts that advance our understanding of poxviruses and their impact on humans, animals, and ecosystems.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
