Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is undeniable that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emergent health problem so dire that it can potentially lead to a ‘post-antibiotic’ era, marked by the end of effective antibiotics. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already defined AMR as a serious threat to global public health, with estimates that AMR is responsible for over 700,000 deaths annually around the world. Despite the increased awareness, the clinical antibacterial pipeline remains insufficient, and there is a pressing and unmet need for innovative antimicrobial drugs.

New chemical entities to tackle AMR are limited, and exploring new scaffolds to achieve new and better outcomes is urgently needed. This proposed Special Issue will provide a platform for researchers to publish their recent findings and perspectives in the design, synthesis, and identification of new antimicrobial agents. High-quality reviews in the field will also be accepted.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Antimicrobial bioassay-guided fractionation of the endophytic fungi Neofusicoccum australe led to the isolation of a new unsymmetrical naphthoquinone dimer, neofusnaphthoquinone B (1), along with four known natural products (25). Structure elucidation was conducted by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic methods, and the antimicrobial activity of all the natural products was investigated, revealing 1 to be moderately active towards methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 16 µg/mL.
