Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Freshwater systems include liquid or frozen water containing low concentrations of dissolved salts and other total dissolved solids, thus excluding seawater and brackish water. To date, the microbial ecology of freshwater habitats characterized by extreme environmental conditions has been poorly studied, resulting in fragmented knowledge. Such systems range from the cold cryosphere (e.g., glaciers, ice caps, and snowfields) to hot geothermal springs and from highly acidic to alkaline water systems, including lakes, ponds, and rivers occurring in cold areas. Extreme freshwater habitats host poorly explored extremophile microbial communities, adapted to harsh environmental conditions, which are inhospitable to most life forms, showing clear patterns of geographic endemism.

The aim of this Special Issue is to delve deeper into the biodiversity and ecological roles of microbes living in extreme freshwater environments. We invite the submission of original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that span a wide spectrum of topics, including but not limited to the following:

  • Microbial diversity and community structure;
  • Microbial interactions and roles in nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition;
  • Responses of microbial communities to environmental changes and disturbances;
  • Role of microorganisms in ecosystem resilience and restoration;
  • Advances in molecular techniques for studying microbial communities.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
