Advanced Membranes for Selective Separation in Water and Environmental Applications

Dear Colleagues,
Membrane technology has emerged as a versatile and sustainable platform for addressing critical challenges in water treatment, desalination, wastewater management, and environmental protection. Recent advances in membrane materials and architectures, surface functionalization, and process design have enabled improved selectivity, permeability, stability, and resistance to fouling. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent developments in advanced membrane materials and membrane-based processes for selective separation in water and environmental applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, advanced membranes for desalination and water purification; removal and selective separation of heavy-metal ions and other emerging contaminants from wastewater; membrane-based resource recovery; nanocomposite, mixed-matrix, and functionalized membranes; hollow-fibre membranes and membrane contactors; and membrane processes for environmental gas separation and CO2 capture. Submissions of studies addressing membrane fouling, wetting, transport mechanisms, long-term stability, scale-up, module development, and process optimization are also encouraged. Both fundamental and applied research, including experimental, modelling, and techno-economic studies, are welcome. This Special Issue seeks to unite researchers working on innovative membrane technologies and provide a platform for advancing efficient, selective, and sustainable membrane-based separation processes for water and environmental applications.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
