Dear Colleagues,
Over the past three decades, significant advances have been made in the genetic engineering of animal models, tissue culture systems, and in silico tools, providing powerful tools for investigating the mechanisms of viral infections and immune regulation in animals and humans. Emerging approaches, such as system biology, couple many of these tools to elucidate the mechanisms of viral infection and immune regulation. In viral infections, the host’s innate immune system is the first line of defense in modulating viral transmission or replication. Innate immune cells rapidly respond to viruses by detecting molecular patterns, and emerging evidence suggests that these cells exhibit a trained memory. The innate immune system triggers the second line of defense, the adaptive immune system, which can generate a robust protective response; however, in persistent viral infections, this response is dysregulated.
Understanding the precise mechanisms of viral infections and immune regulation is essential for developing effective vaccines, immunotherapeutics, and antiviral drugs; however, such mechanistic research requires models that recapitulate viral infections and immune regulations.
This Special Issue aims to provide an overview of recent advances in the field of “Viral Infection and Immune Regulation Mechanisms Research”. We invite you to contribute in the form of original research articles, reviews, or short communications. Topics of interest include innate and adaptive immune responses to acute and persistent animal and human viral infections in various models (human studies, animal models, tissue culture models, and in silico tools) and the molecular and cellular factors involved. We are also interested in host factors that modulate viral infections and immune responses in research models.
