GIS and Remote Sensing for Landscape Assessment and Monitoring
This special issue belongs to the section "Land – Observation and Monitoring".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid evolution of geospatial technologies, Earth observation platforms, and spatial analytics has transformed our capacity to understand, assess, and manage landscapes. Particularly, in agricultural areas, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing provide essential tools for monitoring land dynamics, evaluating environmental pressures, and supporting evidence-based decision-making. With increasing challenges driven by climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and food security demands, integrated spatial approaches are becoming indispensable.
This Special Issue aims to explore innovative applications of GIS and remote sensing for landscape assessment and monitoring, with particular emphasis on agricultural systems and land-related risks. We seek contributions that advance methodological developments, improve multi-source data integration, or demonstrate how geospatial technologies can enhance the sustainable management of land resources across different spatial and temporal scales.
We welcome original research articles and review papers addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Agricultural land monitoring and crop dynamics;
- Land-use and land-cover change;
- Soil degradation, erosion, and desertification;
- Risk assessment and spatial modelling in agricultural landscapes;
- Climate change impacts and adaptation;
- Precision agriculture and smart land management;
- Multi-temporal and multi-sensor approaches;
- Decision-support systems for land governance.
By bringing together diverse perspectives, this Special Issue will contribute to bridging technological innovation and practical solutions for resilient and sustainable landscapes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Land is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
