Land Use Optimization for Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "Land Use, Impact Assessment and Sustainability".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Today, in the context of continuing population growth and ongoing pressure on resources, the optimization of land use for sustainable agricultural and food systems is a critical and timely issue that requires innovative approaches to ensure food security and viable rural development across the globe. As the world faces mounting challenges from climate change, rapid urbanization, and land degradation, there is an urgent need for effective strategies to balance agricultural productivity with the preservation of natural resources. Land use optimization is at the core of these efforts, aiming to improve land management practices that foster sustainable agricultural practices, enhance food security, and support the resilience of rural communities.
This Special Issue, titled “Land Use Optimization for Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems,” seeks to explore the intersection of land use, agricultural practices, and food systems in the context of sustainability. Research in this area is essential for addressing the evolving challenges of global food production, land conservation, and socio-economic well-being in rural areas. It is particularly important as the world faces an increasing demand for food production in the face of multiple demands on limited land resources, shifting climate patterns, and growing pressures on ecosystems.
This Special Issue will highlight the most recent advances in land use optimization techniques, focusing on the integration of sustainable agricultural practices with food system resilience. This subject directly aligns with the scope of Land (MDPI), a journal committed to publishing cutting-edge research on land management, land use, and land policy. The scope of Land encompasses topics related to spatial data analysis, environmental planning, land degradation, urban and rural development, sustainable agricultural practices, and the relationship between land use and socio-economic outcomes, all of which are integral to this Special Issue.
We invite authors to submit original research articles, reviews, and case studies that address the following suggested themes:
- Sustainable land use planning and management in agricultural systems;
- Agroecosystem services and their role in food production and rural livelihoods;
- Precision agriculture and the role of technology in optimizing land use;
- Climate-smart agricultural practices and their impact on land optimization;
- Land restoration and sustainable land rehabilitation strategies;
- Policy frameworks for promoting sustainable agricultural systems;
- Socio-economic impacts of land use changes on rural communities.
We welcome submissions that incorporate interdisciplinary approaches, including, but not limited to, spatial analysis, remote sensing, environmental modeling, and socio-economic assessments. This Special Issue will provide comprehensive insights into how land use can be optimized for sustainable agricultural and food systems to ensure that long-term ecological and food security goals are met.
We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Land is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
