Understanding Fungal Pathogenesis and Plant Immunity for Developing Disease Control Measures
This special issue belongs to the section "Fungi in Agriculture and Biotechnology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Fungal pathogens remain a persistent threat to global food security, causing significant yield losses and quality deterioration in agricultural production. The complex interplay between fungal virulence mechanisms and plant defense responses determines the outcome of infections, yet many aspects of this molecular dialogue remain elusive. Recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics have revolutionized our understanding of how pathogenic fungi establish infection, evade host immunity, and overcome control measures. Simultaneously, progress in deciphering plant immune systems—from pattern-triggered immunity to effector-triggered responses—has opened new avenues for durable resistance breeding.
This Special Issue aims to compile cutting-edge research that bridges fundamental knowledge of fungal pathogenesis with practical applications for disease management. We welcome contributions exploring molecular mechanisms of infection, fungal virulence factors, host immune recognition, and signaling pathways mediating plant defense. Studies addressing the plasticity of fungal lifestyles, the role of effectors in manipulating host responses, and the evolutionary dynamics of pathogen populations are particularly encouraged. Research on innovative control strategies, including biocontrol agents, resistance breeding, and integrated disease management approaches, will also be considered.
By integrating insights from molecular plant pathology, fungal biology, and immunology, this collection seeks to advance sustainable solutions for mitigating fungal diseases in crops.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Fungi is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
