Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce a forthcoming Special Issue of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE) entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Its Application in Ocean Engineering.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a transformative tool in advancing ocean engineering research and practice. With developments in machine learning, deep learning, physics-informed neural networks, and data-driven modelling, AI offers new opportunities to address long-standing challenges in ocean environmental prediction, marine structure design and optimization, hydrodynamic modelling, operational safety, and resource development.

The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for disseminating cutting-edge research on AI-enabled solutions to ocean engineering problems. We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and case studies that explore novel AI methods, integration with physics-based models, and practical applications in the ocean environment. The scope and topics of interest of this Special Issue include the following:

  • AI-based modelling and prediction of ocean waves, currents, and extreme events.
  • Machine learning approaches to vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and structural dynamics of offshore structures.
  • Data-driven optimization and digital twin technologies for offshore engineering systems.
  • Physics-informed machine learning for hydrodynamics and fluid–structure interactions.
  • AI applications in marine renewable energy (wind, wave, tidal, etc.).
  • Intelligent monitoring, fault detection, and risk assessment for ocean structures.
  • Remote sensing, ocean observation, and data assimilation using AI.
  • Hybrid modelling combining AI with numerical simulations and experimental data.

We invite researchers and practitioners to contribute high-quality submissions that showcase advances in theory, methodology, and real-world applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
