Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the era of Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have emerged as transformative forces in manufacturing systems. These technologies, strategic for gaining competitive advantages in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, are revolutionizing traditional production processes by enabling advanced decision making, developed predictive capabilities, and improved operational efficiency. From real-time process optimization to intelligent robotics, AI and ML are paving the way for a new smart manufacturing paradigm embodying cross-disciplinary approaches to problem-solving, applicable across diverse fields of application. AI-driven tools and services can enhance decision-making processes, reduce reliance on employee experience, streamline labor-intensive activities typically performed by workers, and/or outperform the classical analytical approaches to problems. Their applications enable significant time and cost savings in manufacturing systems, enhance quality, and minimize waste, facilitating the development of smart, flexible, and sustainable production ecosystems.
This Special Issue aims to serve as a platform for researchers and practitioners to showcase cutting-edge developments, applications, and advancements in the use of AI and ML in manufacturing applications. By showcasing innovative research and case studies, this issue seeks to emphasize how these technologies are shaping the future of manufacturing.
We invite original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and case studies on topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- Predictive maintenance using AI/ML algorithms;
- AI-driven quality control and defect detection;
- Intelligent AI-based process planning and scheduling;
- AI-based supply chain optimization and logistics;
- Integration of AI/ML with IoT in smart factories;
- AI and ML for sustainable and green manufacturing;
- Human–AI collaboration in industrial environments.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
