New Insights for Pesticide Risk Assessment: Humans and the Environment

Dear Colleagues,

Considering the success of the first edition of the Special Issue, “Pesticide Risk Assessment: Human and Environmental”, published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/ijerph/special_issues/Pesticide_Risk_Assessment), we wish to continue to explore this subject, focusing on the incorporation of new concepts, methods, models, and approaches. 

The assessment of pesticides represents a key and continuously evolving area in chemical risk assessment, with high scientific and political interest. After over 50 years of continuous work, scientific and regulatory developments are presenting new challenges for prospective and retrospective assessments, with several driving forces behind them. This second edition of the Special Issue will address the challenges and opportunities related to the evolution of the risk assessment paradigm, as well as the incorporation of new approach methodologies such as in vitro, in silico and omics, through the application of adverse outcome pathway (AOP) networks and the opportunities for more integrative approaches assessing the overall risk of pesticide use instead of single active substances. An area of particular interest is the integration of human and environmental risk assessments as well as integrated risk/benefit analysis. Expanding the “One Health” principles to cover human, animal, plant and environmental health would provide a solid scientific background for assessing and comparing the sustainability of plant protection strategies. 

This Special Issue is open to any subject related to the risk assessment of pesticides for human health and the environment. Research papers, analytical reviews, case studies, conceptual frameworks, and policy-relevant articles are welcome.
