Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Physical activity and sedentary behavior are critical determinants of health across all stages of life. While insufficient physical activity is strongly associated with increased risk of chronic diseases, prolonged sedentary time has emerged as an independent risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Understanding the interplay between these behaviors throughout life is essential for developing effective strategies for public health.
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly advanced and opened new opportunities in the field of physical activity and health. Machine learning and other AI-based approaches can analyze large epidemiological datasets to identify behavioral trajectories and predictors of physical activity and sedentary patterns. Moreover, wearable devices and sensors generate extensive data on movement and energy expenditure, and AI tools are increasingly used to interpret these data in more precise and meaningful ways.
Importantly, the integration of AI into this field holds great potential for strengthening public health actions. By enhancing disease surveillance, supporting population-level monitoring, and optimizing intervention strategies, AI can contribute to more efficient and equitable health promotion. This Special Issue welcomes a broad range of contributions, including observational and intervention studies, as well as systematic reviews with meta-analyses, focusing on physical activity and sedentary behavior across the course of life and the emerging role of artificial intelligence in advancing public health.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
