New Cultivation and Breeding Methods for Quality Improvement of Tomatoes
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Tomato fruit quality is an important issue for consumers today. Fruit quality is a complex concept, and it is not possible to define it using one absolute parameter. The concept could be defined as those intrinsic properties of the product that satisfy the consumer’s expectations, including external appearance (size, shape, color, defects), texture, flavor, and nutritional value. Additionally, fruit quality is a quantitative, polygenic trait, strongly influenced by environmental conditions or cultural practices, and low heritability.
The purpose of this Special Issue on “New Cultivation and Breeding Methods for Quality Improvement of Tomatoes” is to present innovative cultivation methods (grafting, reduced controlled irrigation, saline conditions, hydroponic systems, integrated pest management and biological control, etc.) and breeding methods (backcross-assisted selection, massive genotyping and phenotyping, genomic selection, gene edition, etc.) that have improved tomato quality in recent years.
