Design and Application of Smart Wearable Devices

Smart wearable devices have emerged as transformative tools across industries, integrating advanced sensors, wireless connectivity, and data processing capabilities. This Special Issue provides a comprehensive overview of the design principles and applications of smart wearables. From healthcare to sports, and fashion to lifestyle, these devices have the potential to revolutionize various domains. By exploring their impact and possibilities, this Special Issue aims to shed light on the transformative potential of smart wearables. The overall focus of this Special Issue is divided into four sections as explained below:

Section 1: Design Principles of Smart Wearable Devices

The first section focuses on the fundamental design principles of smart wearables. It emphasizes the importance of user-centered design and seamless integration into everyday life. Key considerations such as ergonomics, power management, data security, and durability are discussed. Interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers, designers, and human–computer interaction experts is highlighted as crucial to creating wearable devices that are both aesthetically appealing and functionally efficient.

Section 2: Healthcare Applications

The second section delves into the wide range of healthcare applications for smart wearables. These devices can monitor vital signs, track physical activity, and facilitate remote patient monitoring. Integration with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms enables early disease detection and personalized health interventions. Challenges and ethical considerations associated with wearable healthcare technology are explored, highlighting the need for data privacy and reliable algorithms.

Section 3: Sports and Fitness Applications

The third section focuses on the impact of smart wearables in sports and fitness. These devices, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, revolutionize performance monitoring, goal setting, and progress tracking. Wearables also introduce gamification, boosting motivation, and engagement. Additionally, they can prevent injuries and optimize training regimens by providing real-time feedback and analysis, thereby enhancing athletic performance and fitness outcomes.

Section 4: Fashion and Lifestyle Applications

The fourth section focuses on exploration in the fusion of smart wearables with fashion and lifestyle. It discusses fashionable wearables that seamlessly blend technology with style, catering to fashion-conscious consumers. Smart textiles and e-textiles integrated into clothing enable biometric sensing, temperature regulation, and haptic feedback. Wearables also act as personal assistants, enhancing daily experiences with features such as smart notifications, augmented reality, and personalized recommendations.

This Special Issue provides a comprehensive overview of the design and application of smart wearable devices. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
