Kos, Greece
The 6th International Conference on Efficient Water Systems (EWaS6), entitled "Safeguarding Water & Health in a Financially, Socially and Environmentally Fragile Era", is the first scientific conference worldwide to be co-organized by departments of Engineering and Medicine.
This fact ensures that EWaS6 will serve as a meeting ground, an interactive platform, and a catalyst—bringing together for the first time globally, scientists who work with systems governed by the same basic principles and laws of operation, but who typically operate in parallel and in isolation.
It is well known that the natural sciences have greatly benefited from the realization that the systems they study can be analyzed, optimized, and more broadly approached through a seemingly unrelated discipline—bioscience. Genetic algorithms and neural networks are prime examples of how human biology can be utilized for the study of any hydraulic system, and beyond.
The human body is the most advanced hydraulic system in existence, where various types of fluids—both Newtonian and non-Newtonian (water, air, clean blood, "dirty" blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid)—flow. It contains the most efficient pump ever created (the heart), the most effective processing and purification systems (kidneys, liver), the most intricate neural network (brain, spinal cord), highly sophisticated airways and compressible air chambers (lungs), and autonomous valves of all kinds (blocking, check valves). On the other hand, medicine has significantly benefited from materials science and valve technologies inspired by mechanical hydraulic systems.
The conference aims to become the space where new interdisciplinary approaches are born, benefiting both fields involved.
The conference is co-organized by five (5) University Departments from four (4) Universities located in Greece, Italy, and Türkiye.
Specifically, the departments involved are as follows:
- Department of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), led by Professor V. Kanakoudis, co-founder of the EwaS (Efficient Water Systems) International Conference Series;
- Department of Environmental Engineering, International Hellenic University (IHU), led by Associate Professor E. Keramaris;
- School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), led by Professor T. Papamitsou;
- Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, University of Naples Federico II, Italy, led by Associate Professor F. De Paola;
- Faculty of Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering, Akdeniz University, Türkiye, led by Professor H. Muhammetoglu.
Target Audience
The conference primarily addresses Scientists/Researchers in Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, and Engineering.
Professionals and technical staff from the following sectors can also greatly benefit the following:
- Construction/Infrastructure Engineering Companies;
- Consulting/Design Firms;
- ICT Companies (Smart Networks, Digital Twin, AI/ML);
- Suppliers of Telemetry, Sensors & SCADA;
- Public and Private Water Utilities;

The COST Action NERO (european Network on Extreme fiRe behaviOr, CA22164) is pleased to invite you to the 2nd International Workshop on Extreme Wildfire Events (X-Fire 2026).
The X-Fire Workshop aims to serve as a focused international forum for advancing knowledge on the unique challenges of extreme wildfire events through the exchange of scientific and operational insights. The Workshop is structured around the following key objectives:
- Enhance understanding of extreme wildfire events by integrating up-to-date knowledge from multiple scientific disciplines, including—but not limited to—physics, meteorology, fire ecology, fuel dynamics, numerical modeling, machine learning, and remote sensing.
- Identify research gaps and challenges in observing, modeling, predicting, and managing extreme wildfire events.
- Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, operational experts, and policymakers to develop innovative methodologies, enhance predictive capabilities, improve decision-making, and identify lessons learned from past events to inform best practices in extreme wildfire events management.
By creating a focused scientific and operational exchange on extreme wildfire events, X-Fire aims to fill a critical gap, ensuring that the complexities of these events receive sustained attention and interdisciplinary collaboration.
