Diversity and Evolution of Meiofaunal Taxa
This special issue belongs to the section "Phylogeny and Evolution".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Meiofaunal organisms, including microscopic to small metazoans inhabiting marine, freshwater, and terrestrial interstitial environments, represent a highly diverse yet still insufficiently explored component of animal life. Despite their ubiquity and ecological importance, meiofaunal taxa are often overlooked in broad-scale syntheses of animal diversity, phylogeny, and evolutionary processes. Their unique life histories, frequent morphological simplification, and adaptation to constrained habitats make them particularly valuable for understanding evolutionary innovation and convergence.
This Special Issue aims to advance current knowledge on the diversity and evolution of meiofaunal lineages by integrating classical and modern approaches. We invite contributions addressing phylogenetic relationships, species delimitation, and evolutionary history using morphological and molecular data. Studies focusing on cryptic diversity, integrative taxonomy, and the application of high-throughput sequencing techniques are especially encouraged.
In addition, we welcome research exploring patterns of diversification, biogeography, and ecological adaptation across meiofaunal taxa. The role of environmental constraints in shaping evolutionary trajectories and morphological diversity represents a key topic of interest. Contributions spanning a wide range of taxa (e.g., nematodes, copepods, gastrotrichs, tardigrades, and other understudied groups) are also particularly encouraged.
By bringing together diverse perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to highlight meiofauna as model systems for investigating fundamental questions in evolution and to promote their integration into broader discussions of animal diversity.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diversity is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2100 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
